HYPERION Solar Simulator

Greatcell Energy is proud to introduce its fourth series of innovative solar simulators. Hyperion IV is designed to utilise LED light sources without a focal lens in a single DOT configuration, integrated with a revolutionary head and all the drive electronics.
HYPERION IV is now available in two models:
HYPIV10 with active illumination area of 10cm*10cm
HYPIV20 with active illumination area of 20cm*20cm.

The HYPIV20 system provides a variable illumination output from 0.1 to 1.0 sun over an illumination area larger than 20 cm by 20 cm.

HYPIV20 has an adjustable working distance of 9,5 cm while HYPIV10 with active area of 10 cm X 10 cm, has an adjustable working distance of 8,5 cm.

HYPERION IV is compliant with the most stringent international standards (ASTM E927-05, IEC 60904-9 2007, and JIS C 8912), in particular it matches A+A+A+ class that is twice the accuracy of the IEC standard.

Hyperion: the best the sun can get, without being in the sun.
Enjoy a low consumption simulator you can use with a standard single phase home socket. Experience an extended LED life with the optimised light intensity. The simulator is a low weight compact design with all the electronics installed in the head to allow an easy integration in any test environment and an effortless machine transportation. With top-of-the-line wide excursion micrometric art for the most precise control in positioning and an even more precise measurement to use with a wider range of sample holders and devices.

"We would never accept to wait for an hour to print something or to access a hard disk, so why should we accept it from a solar simulator?"

the challenge

Moving solar simulators from the “laboratory equipment” space to the “electronics” space.

We would never accept to wait for an hour to print something or to access a hard drive, we would not accept to have to calibrate our memory each time we use our PC or to replace it every 1,000 hours. So why should we accept it from a solar simulator?
We would NOT accept any compromise on class so the simulator would obviously have to be A+, with an extended wavelength, easy to operate, customisable for different intensities and scenarios without any long calibration, lasting longer than 1,000 hours per lamp and to would be much cheaper than xenon ones, even for large areas.
The solution

Introducing LED technology.

The challenge for a new high performance solar simulator looked nearly impossible to win until we decided to use LED technology. We decided to use only commercially available LEDs to avoid expensive and complex small proprietary LED products that would not guarantee the necessary quality and availability over time.
Scouting the market we realised that we could find all the LED’s we needed with some creativity as there are LED with different wave lengths used in dental applications, for aesthetic treatments or for greenhouse and hydroponic applications. Once we secured all the LED we had to position them to guarantee the perfect match so we had to find a “tile” configuration that could guarantee the result we were looking for within the very tight standard requirements for A+ simulators.

Dimensions

• Illumination Head HYPIV20: L 42 cm x W 42 cm x H 20 cm (L 22 cm X W 22 cm X H 12 cm on Hyperion IV 10)
• Precision Arm extension: 35cm (20 cm for Hyperion IV 10)
• Distance from the light source to achieve 1 SUN: 9.5 cm (8.5 cm for Hyperion IV 10)

Software

Dedicated Software enables the customisation of the LED matrix emission spectrum starting from default (AM1.5G). The operator can dim the output of a single LED family (the dimming range can vary with different LED types) or the entire spectrum in a 1% step (or multiples thereof).
Each LED family can be switched off and dimmed individually to simulate different scenarios (sunrise, dusk, indoor, etc.). Unlike Xenon lamp based solar simulators there is no need for expensive filters. Personalised custom spectra can be stored in a repository and then retrieved without any re-alignment or calibration activities.
