Description & BenefitsA ligand is an ion or neutral molecule that bonds to a central metal atom or ion. Ligands act as Lewis bases (electron donors), and the central metals they bond to act as Lewis acids (electron acceptors). Ligands have at least one donor atom with a pair of lone electrons used to form covalent bonds with the central metal ion or atom that they are attached to. Ligands can be anions, cations, or neutral molecules. In DSC, the ligand is an essential building block for the manufacture of ruthenium based dyes.
